Practicing snowmobiling

What you should know

The FCMQ has chosen to make trail safety a priority. The FCMQ’s actions are as follows:

  • The development, together with government authorities, of the Règlement de sécurité du circuit de courses de motoneiges du Québec (the Québec snowmobile race circuit safety regulations) in 1997. These regulations provide the race supervisor with the necessary authority to conduct races safely;
  • The provision of publications allowing to better plan excursions in all safety;
  • The transmission of information on acts and regulations;
  • The organization of the Safety Caravan
  • The presence of provincial trail wardens: Volunteers reporting directly to the FCMQ work closely with police forces and local trail wardens to visit local clubs and patrol trails. These individuals are provided with snowmobiles clearly identified with the project and equipped with flashing lights;
  • The signage activities and special services: Priority is given to the updating and implementation of efficient signage;
  • Recommendations regarding the minimum ice thicknesses required:

Minimum age required to drive a snowmobile: 16 years
(Act respecting off-highway vehicles – June 13, 2006)

Required for drivers under 18 years: a certificate attesting that he or she has the knowledge required to operate a snowmobile.

Snowmobilers under 18 years residing outside of Québec: Such operators are not required to hold the aforementioned certificate, if they are allowed to operate an off-highway vehicle under legislation in force in their home jurisdiction.

In Québec, the training courses leading to the obtention of a certificate of competency are offered by ConduiPRO, groupement coopératif des écoles de conduite indépendantes du Québec.
